“Collaboration with Manhattan University’s Pride Center: Taking a look at queer fashion”
“As a queer woman, my style is one of the most important things to my identity. In my teenage years, it was confusing at times to figure out how to accurately represent my sexuality and gender (especially in my primarily conservative hometown). I always felt like people could tell I was queer when I presented in a masculine way, worrying that it would put a target on my back. Instead, I decided to dress as femininely as possible and hide the fact that I was incredibly uncomfortable in my style and identity. Upon moving to New York and going through serious self acceptance, I realized that my queerness is something to be proud of, but also something I can love even more through finding my individual style. I love expressing my sexuality through fashion and have grown to understand the privilege I hold in being able to love who I love and express that in my style. I think the beauty of being queer is being able to express my identity through articles of clothing and the ability to connect with other queer people through fashion as well. While we don’t look the same, I know I’m not alone in feeling scared to express myself and feeling lost in someone else’s style. I also know that the queer community will always find ways to unite and one of my favorite ways we have done this is through fashion.”
