As a queer woman, my style is one of the most important things to my identity. In my teenage years, it was confusing at times to figure out how to accurately represent my sexuality and gender (especially in my primarily conservative hometown).

I’d like to say that our clothes don’t define who we are, they are just an extension of us. But that's not entirely true. What I put out into the world is what I decide I want to be perceived as. To some of us it's a conscious and loud decision and to others, it's something quiet and more self preserved, an inkling to others of who you are but a silent but strong recognition to yourself.

Growing up among a relatively conservative crowd truly shaped my fashion choices, especially in grade school. I remember always trying to acclimate myself to whatever everyone else was wearing—unfortunately, that ranged from Nike Dry-Fit to the unreasonably expensive and bland Vineyard Vines.

Many of us, including people with disabilities, people over the age of 30, queer people, and people who are larger than a size 6, are taught to reject fashion. We are told it’s elitist. It's wasteful. It’s not for us.

Growing up, I never felt as though my look truly embodied who I was. There was no queer representation in my life as a kid; the person who I imagined myself being was in no way who I am today. In my head, I was meant to be this confident, hyper-feminine girl who loved dresses and makeup, but not too much to where I looked like I tried too hard.
